A common sight for people stationed in the right part of Germany in the 80s.
Another Week Ends ...
I have recovered from my sickness. My sinuses are much better.
Kung Fu
We were considering Kung Fu tonight but my lovely wife and I have agreed to go tomorrow instead. I like the weekend classes, and I really like the grappling classes which follow it.
Since my upcoming test involves material going way back, my lovely wife has found a binder and put all of our tests in it. I had all my tests from blue-green stripe forward in my book, and I was able to find all my tests up to yellow-blue stripe in a box. My lovely wife (being much better organized than I) had all her tests in her book, from white forward. So now we have all her tests, and all my tests except Blue, in one place, for handy reviewing.
As she's pointed out, this is going to help her quite a bit, as she can just see what I did and avoid my (numerous) mistakes. Unfortunately, as I pointed out, the next test is her blue, and that one's missing.
The fact that I have all my tests except one is bugging me. The completist in me wants that damn test. If I was missing two, that would be okay, but just one? Grr.
Also, for anybody who is counting, my lovely wife did better than me on white, white-yellow and yellow (quite a bit better in two cases). I beat her by one half of one mark on my yellow-blue. Starting in blue I maintained a not very impressive mid-80s average, so I'm sure she'll trounce me thoroughly in future.
The Null Chronicles
I received a quick missive from Null indicating that they were in the new house with movers arriving imminently. The move seems to be proceeding well thus far (touch wood).
World Domination in Three Easy Steps
We gathered at Serdic's place last night for a game of Axis & Allies, which I hadn't played since high school. We, in this case, was myself, Serdic, Prime, and Big W, who supplied the game. A random draw resulted in me playing the UK allied with Big W as the US and the USSR, versus Serdic's Japanese and Prime's Germans.
We had some fun, although I think Prime would be forgiven for some frustration at his lack of success against the Russians and his inability to do anything else. I feel his pain; aside from winning control of the North Atlantic and sweeping away the small cadre of German forces in North Africa, there isn't much for me to do either, except exploit a fluky-good roll on the technology table to bomb Europe into submission.
Seems like an awesome game, though, and I eagerly anticipate our next match.
I've also done some research into the new 2004 revised edition of the game, and I wouldn't be surprised if I picked up a copy sometime soon. There are a number of rules tweaks which serve to streamline things, balance the game, and un-knot knotty rules knots, but the single biggest improvement (to my mind) is in the playing pieces. The basic edition uses not-very-exciting and not-very-visible colours for units, with the Japanese and British in particular being very close together colour-wise. Moreover, the units are all the same; the only difference between German tanks and Russian tanks and American tanks is the colour.
As you can see, this situation is considerably improved.

Now we're talking.
This Weekend
As mentioned, kung fu tomorrow. Also, we are heading over to the Greek's place to join his illustrious self and Ladybug, and the Rocket and the ever-delightful TeamHooking, for dinner and drinks. Xmas presents will be opened. There will, I am assured, be Tacos.
