Today is Monday and I have taken it off. After the past few weeks, I am feeling the need for a bit of vacation. An extra day isn't much but it'll help.
Saturday
My lovely wife's good friend BrownEyedGirl has a birthday coming up. She's also about to leave the country to go to South Korea to teach ESL, and this is therefore the last weekend in which my lovely wife will be able to go and see her. So, on Saturday, we piled in the car and drove out to her parent's lovely home to say hi, and give her some presents that we haven't managed to get to her yet, and see her before she leaves.
A few random observations:
- I always forget how short BrownEyedGirl is.
- The Cooking Channel was on in the background for a lot of the afternoon. If I ever got the Cooking Channel, I'd probably have to put Nigella Lawson on The List before too long.
- BrownEyedGirl's family are a lot of fun, and her mom is an amazing cook. Of course, she's also German, so I may be biased.
- Bathrooms probably shouldn't have giant windows, even if they mostly look out on empty countryside.
- When chocolate goes bad, it isn't quite the same as when cream or eggs go bad, but it still sucks.
We stayed most of the day (we couldn't turn down BrownEyedGirl's mom's offer of dinner) and got back late.
Sunday
Sunday we lounged around the house for a while before heading down to the Wine and Food Show, where we met up with Dougly and the CBC, Izzy and Wing, and Serdic. We also ran into the Kewarkens (he of the Crufty Site Blog and his lovely wife) and said hi.
Wing has a new blog, GeekWithPowerTools, which I've linked over on the right. Join in the adventures of a non-handy geek as he begins renovating his house. (He's braver than I am; I know my limitations and that includes anything more complicated than screwing in a light bulb.)
The Wine and Food show was fun. We got there about half past two and were quite ready to pack it in when it wound down at six. There were more food venues than I remember from years past, and quite a few more beer vendors, most likely (as my lovely wife pointed out) due to the explosion of local microbreweries around these parts.
Since beer was normally half the number of tickets as wine, I was able to stretch my ticket supply and enjoy a fair quantity of frothy beverages. I also drank a bit of wine, mostly just glasses that my lovely wife tried and didn't like, and a shot of this apple cider based ice wine, which was good, but I think I'll stick with normal ice wine. My lovely wife tried some Moroccan food, which was interesting but not really my cup of tea, and I had a dish of buffalo on potatoes and another of mixed game in teriyaki, which were great. We also partook in big dishes of creme brulee. Mmm!
The jury was mixed on the CBC's horizontally-striped multicolour stockings. I liked them, but my lovely wife and Dougly had their reservations. Izzy said that it was very 'Hong Kong style'.
One last point. Taking your wine glass into the bathroom with you and putting it atop the urinal while you do your business is not kosher. I don't care; it just isn't. I'm amazed and disgusted that I need to point this out, but seriously, every time I had to go, somebody was doing that. For Christ's sake, people. WTF.
Monday
Today I am doing SFA. I slept in, surfed the weeb a bit, and sent Serdic a quick note about one thing at work which he's graciously looking into for me. Then this blog post, after which I'm going to tear all my decks apart and rebuild them from scratch. Serdic is picking me up on his way out from work for Magic night tonight. He's making chicken stew with dumplings, and I can't wait.
Unfortunately we will be missing Null's presence this evening as he is overseas, but we'll be raising a glass to him. To the Ithman!
Battlestar Galactica
We watched the first two episodes of BSG 2.5. Holy Jebus, this show is incredible. Ron Moore is a genius.
That's all I have to say about that.
