Shoe Shopping
My lovely wife picked me up from work yesterday to go for a chiropractor appointment. Afterwards I suggested we go looking for a new pair of shoes for her, as her current pair of what I like to think of as 'utility shoes' (the shoes worn on a regular basis, the default shoes if you will) were long since ready to be replaced. We were able to find a decent pair, after which we stopped by Chapters so I could pick up a couple of books.
The first of these was His Majesty's Dragons, the first of a (so far) trilogy which blends fantasy elements with Napoleonic historical fiction. I am looking forward to it.
The other book was the God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins.
Religious Lunacy At Home and Abroad
Dawkins is a notable and outspoken atheist, although he has referred to himself as a kind of agnostic, saying that he is agnostic about God in the same sense that he is agnostic about Fairies. His book is an open assault on religion and the kind of fuzzy thinking which leads people into the abandonment of personal responsibility for the warm and cozy cushion of organized religion. I'm looking forward to his book.
Earlier that day, oddly enough, someone came to the door to give my lovely wife a pamphlet on religion. We don't normally get god-bot propaganda, so the coincidental timing was interesting. The flier is entitled "The World of False Religion is Coming to an End", or something along those lines, with bullet points: how this will happen, what this means to you, etc. I found this a comforting message, until I realized that they were claiming that False Religion would come to an end only to be replaced with True Religion. I stopped paying attention at that point so I can't really tell you how this will happen or what it means to me.
I'm afraid I may well be woefully unprepared, consequently, when the mendacious and twisted citadels of False Religion collapse and True Religion spreads its glorious reign across the earth, but I'm hoping that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is involved, because I really like the idea of a beer volcano.
Friday and Onwards
The week is over.
Our brief period of snowfall yesterday, disheartening as it was, has passed. Today was actually reasonably pleasant.
Tonight, the Kung Fu. Due to Hallowe'en and various other scheduling, tonight is the only night that I can go, so off I go.
High Class Boozing
The Wine and Food Show is this weekend, and I've had offers to go all three days it's open. Unfortunately, I can't go tonight with Serdic and RJA, since tonight is the only night I can make it to Kung Fu. The Greek wants me to go with him on Saturday, and the idea is very appealing, but my lovely wife would definitely not be able to make that and I don't think I will be able to either. We'll see.
Our Sunday is free, though, and Izzy suggested a Sunday visit to the Show quite a while back, so we'll be joining her and Wing and Dougly and the CBC for that.
RJA seems to be under the impression that the 'and' in Wine and Food Show should be taken to indicate approximate parity between Wine and Food. He is, as it happens, quite wrong. It is the Wine Show, with a bit of Food. A more descriptive name would be the Wine Show, with Lots and Lots of People, some of whom are Attractive and in Fancy Dress, with a little bit of Other Types of Alcohol, and some Food. But that's harder to fit on a wine glass, so there you are.
