Dogs and Cats, Living Together

Mass Hysteria!

I don't talk about work much, so suffice it to say that we had a conference, which was interesting and involved some very fun activities with people that we, lamentably, don't get to see often enough. But now it's done and we have a huge pile of work to dig ourselves out from under.

Good thing I'm just that good.

There's A Storm A-Comin'

Apparently there is. A storm coming, I mean. I grimly await the vast quantities of percipitation Mother Nature has up her sleeve.

No Game Night, or as the French say, Pas de Game Night

Hiatus this week, for the reasons outlined in the first paragraph and the presence of Null in Germany. Back on Monday though, I'd expect.

Enough With The Lungs Already

My lungs have been dicking around with me for weeks now. I'm frequently left feeling short of breath, when I really shouldn't be. I really wish that I'd either get sick or get better; this hanging around half-way is irritating.

Schizotypic Behaviour

Read an interesting article today addressing the evolutionary origins of the genetic components of Schizophrenia. The theory is that schizophrenia is the fully blown version of an adaptation which is hugely negative in its full form, but is mildly beneficial in its much more common partial form, much like how another genetic adaptation results in sickle cell disease and thus immunity from malaria, while the full version results in horrible haemoragic death. Natural selection selects for the beneficial partial version and we just have to live with the occasional disastrous incidence of the full version.

The partial version of the genetic disorder related to schizophrenia results in schizotypism. This is characterized by withdrawn behaviour and other symptoms, but most strongly with a very profound literalism and inability to properly judge levels of abstraction. The theory is that this was selected for historically because people like that make good holy men and shamen, and in modern societies, good priests and monks. Unfortunately you then get the occasional full-blown schizophrenic, but evolution doesn't deal in particulars, and it can be a real bitch somtimes.

It's pretty interesting stuff.

Dinner

Taco bake! Woohoo!

Old Home Week

Been talking with a very old friend I ran across thanks to a Facebook page I made in order to look at DiveBunny's Facebook page. Wow, it's been a long time. Good to talk to her again though, it's always interesting to see what people have been up to and reconnect with people you'd lost touch with.

Makes me feel a little old though, sometimes, thinking about how long ago some things have been.

That's About It

This week has been very busy and there hasn't been a super-huge amount of time to do non-work-related stuff that I write about here. Even the extracurricular stuff has been work-oriented. Which isn't a problem, per se, but I'm really enjoying just sitting on my ass tonight and drinking beer and not doing much of anything.

I'll try to be more interesting tomorrow.

A Little Bit of Eye Candy

A Japanese submarine aircraft carrier from World War 2.

No, seriously.
