Meditations Upon a Hockey Season
So the season's over. The Sens weren't able to bring home the big prize, but I'm not distraught. They've never been to the big show before, and got beat by a team which has lots of Cup-chasing experience under their belts. It was an awesome season and an amazing run. They're a team with more talent than most other teams could dream of having.
This is not going to be their last Cup run. This is a learning experience. One day -- one day soon -- Stanley's comin' home. In the meanwhile, they played with skill and heart and I'm proud of them.
Judging by the fact that five thousand people showed up to cheer them home at the airport, I'd say a whole lot of people are proud of them.
Being at the center of the Cup madness has been a wild experience. The entire city came together in excitement, enthusiasm and pride. I'm glad I had a chance to be a part of that red army.
I'm proud of my town and of my team.
GO SENS GO !!!
Game Night
Game Night this past Thursday; Serdic and I got Null out for a game. We gave Shadowrun a go. Great game, lots of fun, although Serdic blew my runners all to shit with an unfortunate minefield. Bastard.
My lovely wife made Kung Pao Chicken (spicy) and it frikkin' rocked.
Weekend Hijinks
My lovely wife was off at a bachelorette this weekend, so I hooked up with the Rocket, TeamHooking (devilishly attired in skirt and henna tattoo), the Greek, and Ladybug. We visited the Marina and a pub with 300+ kinds of beer, which was awesome.
As the Greek has pointed out in his usual venue, the Rocket wasn't exactly at top form afterwards, but isn't that what a birthday is about?
Good time had by all!
Kung Fu
Off to Kung Fu. This was an awesome class, namely because:
a) the air conditioning works again;
b) the downstairs has been renovated and expanded greatly;
c) aforementioned downstairs now has, in addition to other equipment, 3 additional wooden dummies;
d) class rocked.
Although I did get hit in the hand twice during weapons, which will leave decent bruises, I'm sure.
Tonight
Tonight, I'm cooking souvlaki skewers. We picked up wraps and tzatziki at Greek on Wheels and tomatoes and red onions at farm boy; chicken souvlaki wraps, here we come! Mmmm.
Geekery
I was pretty happy with my world war 2 rules, in so far as the tabletop stuff (moving, shooting, running away) goes. But I wasn't happy with the activation system.
Most tabletop games fall into two categories; IGO-UGO, in which players alternate activating all of their stuff (all my stuff goes, then all your stuff goes); and Alternating Activation, in which players alternate activating individual units. I wanted something better, which also reflected (in an elegant, non-intrusive way) the differing formations, orientations, behaviours and limitations of the different belligerents throughout the course of the second world war.
I think I got it figured out this week. I can't wait to give it a try.
Unfortunately my first attempt at making the cards I'll require for this failed badly. I'm hoping Wolfgang can put his graphic design black hoodoo to work coming up with something better.
Star Trekkin' Across the Universe
On Saturday, before my lovely wife departed, we did a round of shopping. Costco had seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation on for $50. Given that they're normally in the $120 range, that's not too shabby.
I picked up seasons 3 and 4. My lovely wife asked why, to which I replied that season 3 was when it got really good. I'll come back for seasons 1 and 2 later.
I watched 16 hours of TNG last weekend, while painting tanks and such.
Obsessive? Me? Of course not ... why do you ask?
Meta Observations
Shouldn't Star Trek fall under Geekery?
The answer is no. Geekery is for my gaming hobbies. Star Trek is much more run of the mill geekery. Computer geekery and literary geekery likewise don't end up under that particular rubric.
Mini Movie Review
Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End.
Very entertaining, in much the same ways as the first two. Desperately in need of an editor; way over the top in more than one place; plot holes you could drive a truck through. But, it's a movie about pirates. Of course it's worth seeing.
And In Other News
Apple released their Safari browser for Windows. It's so pretty. I can almost forget I'm using a nasty poxy windows box when I run it.
RJA mentioned an interview in which Steve Jobs was asked, since iTunes came out for windows, and Apple became one of the world's biggest Windows software developers, how does that feel? And Steve Jobs replied, it's like giving tall glasses of ice water to people in hell.
Thanks Steve. Mmm, Safari. That hits the spot.
