Bit of a Letdown, Really

Every year my lovely wife and I go and take a look at the CHEO Dream Home. We wander around the house, our shoes in convenient plastic bags, and marvel at it all. We discuss what we'd use the various rooms for, what alterations may be required, what social events we could host with such resources at our disposal.

Today we went to the 2010 dreamhome, and it was a singularly off-putting experience.

This year's house is gorgeous on the outside. The master bedroom is very nice and has a wonderful en suite and walk-in closet; the shower in particular was called out for attention.

The front door is also nice.

That's about it.

The artwork, as usual, was uniformly horrible, with a few notable exceptions. The furniture ranged from acceptable to downright horrid. The flooring was mostly awful.

The use of space, though, was what really stood out. Downstairs there was a huge amount of unusable space around the stairs, wine room and pool table room. There was at least one bedroom less than you'd expect and only one office. This may have been because the laundry machines weren't in the mudding room, but on their own upstairs, thus requiring twice the space.

Overall I left it feeling much more constrained than I would be in my own present, much smaller, abode; the space that they have is so poorly employed that there really isn't room to do any of the things that I would need. We would be bereft of a den, a gaming room, an in-laws suite and a library, and I'm not entirely sure what we would gain in its place. Extra space around the staircase and an upstairs washer and dryer, I suppose.

We were both somewhat stunned to walk out of it in agreement that it really couldn't be fixed and we would have to just live in it for a year and then sell it off and buy something we could live in. I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that a CHEO dreamhome would be completely unsuitable for my needs, but here we are.

T - 2 days before India. Tomorrow, I post pictures of my lovely wife's cakes. You don't want to miss it.
