Thank God For Title Memory

When I start to type a title in Blogger, it gives me a little list box with similar titles I've used in the past. Repetition is starting to become a danger.

Real quick one here. Work xmas party last night; one of the (few) downsides to my lovely wife becoming self-employed was that she wouldn't get a company xmas party anymore, but then her biggest client started inviting her to theirs. Which works out nicely.

That party was Saturday night. Fallout from that party is one reason you're getting a short blog post, rather than a long one. Today has not been a productive day.

I also got a haircut this weekend, which involved lingering in a Starbucks for an hour. I honestly don't get the whole 'coffee shop' appeal, in terms of hanging out in it for any length of time in excess of that required to order my caramel macchiato. That could be taken as an indication that I am getting old, but I don't think I would have enjoyed it all that much even when I was young and artsy and emo.

The old man gave me a CD full of audio books which I've transferred to my iPod. I'm currently listening to "Castles of Steel", a naval history of the First World War. It is not a subject I am well versed in, but it is beautifully written and greatly informative, and I am finding myself increasingly interested in the subject.

Now. Not to get all "Oooh, they mentioned us, I feel all validated" and shit, but this is very funny.

I find it difficult to linger in a Starbucks on my own. I have had to do this while waiting for something before. I see some people reading a book in the cafe but I can't do that (I don't know how to read).

I do find it easy to linger in a Starbucks with good company. It's the perfect setting to convince yourself that you are--and by consequence your life is--better than whomever you decide. You don't need to become the leader of a country, climb the tallest mountain, or dedicate your life to helping those in need to feel better than anyone: you simply need to sit in a Starbucks with a friend long enough for the subject to arise (which, in Starbucks, is likely to be quite quickly).

Note that the same phenomenon can be seen, though with a different attitude, in various "hippie" coffee shops, such as Bridgehead. I don't know the specifics, as I wouldn't dare spend a minute more than I needed to in one of those hippie-breeding cesspools, but I know it's there. Stay in a Bridgehead long enough and you'll come out with dreadlocks. Just sayin'.

I was listening to a book on tape, which gives you all the benefits of reading a book combined with the benefits of wearing headphones and thus isolating you from the communal space.

One person was sitting in the corner with a binder filled with papers, notes and tags, wearing a shawl and scribbling with a pen. She was trying real hard to project an air of professorial studiousness.

Most people were just reading the paper and stuffing their kids with pastries. This is, after all, Kanata.

Also, that was possibly the best blog comment evar.

I can't see the video - apparently being in the US means I'm not allowed to see it. :( Poo.
