All the Animals

Owen has started teething.

If that sounds like he's growing up too fast, it's because he is.  The books say he's supposed to start teething at about six months, but may start as early as three; at ten weeks he's beat the lower bound.  Never the less, teething he is.

He has two front teeth on the bottom that are coming in.  You can see them when he laughs, and you can definitely feel them.  He had some of the drooling and redness in the cheeks that you're warned to expect.  Other than that, aside from possibly a bit of mild crankiness, he's been fine.

In other news, Owen's appreciation of the animal kingdom continues to expand.  Whereas he initially was all about the monkeys, he's started to find Giraffe very amusing.  The other day I was changing him and he got into a giggle cycle with Giraffe.  Usually when he does this, it's because someone (ie my mother) is holding him and laughing at him, and he laughs at them laughing, and it just snowballs from there.  This time, though, he was doing it all by himself, watching Giraffe.

He has a wonderful laugh.

He's also improving in his ability to control his body.  We have a set of animal shapes that make various noises - bells, rattles, etc.  They strap onto his wrists so he can make noise as he flails his limbs.  He's figuring out that he can make noise when he has them on, although he's still having a hard time doing it reliably.  His ability to hold his soother in place is improving noticeably, though, and he can sometimes get it back in when he loses it.

Today was the Santa Claus parade.  Traditionally this marks the couple of hours a year in which I can't leave my house even if I wanted to, since the parade goes down the street onto which both ends of our crescent exit.  This year is the first one we went and watched the parade, because we had Owen to take with us.

This also was the first road test of the snuggle bag we have in his car seat, which did an excellent job of keeping him toasty warm, although the very mild weather also contributed.

The parade was significantly longer than Owen could stay awake.  As such, he missed Santa Claus, mounted on his sleigh with reindeer atop a fire truck.  I gave him the salient information before we started, though, describing it as "a man dressed up as Santa Claus" and warning him against trusting the word of anyone claiming magical powers.

It's an important lesson to learn and it's never too soon to start learning it.
