In the South Atlantic Ocean, the explorer Ernest Shackleton, having spent two years in the remote Antarctic, reached the small island of South Georgia on May 20 [1916]. The first question he asked Mr Sorlie, the manager of the tiny British whaling station, was "Tell me, when was the war over?" To which Mr Sorlie replied, "The war is not over. Millions are being killed. Europe is mad. The world is mad."
