Language

Over the past couple of days, Owen has decided he wants in on the conversation.  The difference is very noticeable.  He has been babbling for a while, testing out his ability to make different sounds, but this is not the same.

He's started pointing to things that he's interested in.  When he does that, we say the word.  He'll look at you and try to say it back.  Sometimes it's close, sometimes it's not, but you can tell that he's trying to reproduce the word you just said and associate it with whatever he's looking at.

He's just been doing this for the past couple of days but when he decides it's time to do something, he goes after it with all the energy and determination in the world.  It amazes me how fast his brain is developing.

His mimicry extends past language and sometimes comes out in ways you wouldn't expect.  He likes to make noises and if you make them back, he'll keep it going.  The other night he was in his bath and my lovely wife squeezed one of his bath toys, and it made a hissing noise (it's one of the plastic hollow ones with a little squirt-hole on the bottom).  Owen looked at it, scrunched up his face, and snorted air out his nose.

His walking is progressing in a similar fashion.  He's very confident now about cruising and getting up and down from whatever objects he's going to use to stabilize himself, and he's willing to move from one to another, or to hang off of one with only one hand.  His balance is still not good at all but he's working on it every day.

He's also turned that determination to the subject of not sleeping.  Sometimes he goes down easily but sometimes he can take an hour (or two and a half) to finally give up and fall asleep.  Mom and dad are not impressed.

He's also taken to chewing on the railing of his crib.  It looks like a dog has gotten to it; he ripped all the finish off one section and got some of the wood chewed out.

The chewing is because of his teeth, which are causing him more problems as the molars proceed, and we devoutly hope, head towards a conclusion.  His gums are quite swollen right now and he's not happy about it but with any luck he'll be done with the hard part before too long.
