Impediments

Trying Health Problems and All the Fun They Cause

We took Owen to Calgary.  The plane rides were generally fine; he slept through takeoffs and landings and spent a lot of time making new friends and flirting with the ladies.

Owen developed various illnesses once we were there which he is just now getting over.  Our return was a gruelling exercise in sleep deprivation.  The final tally at the resulting doctor's visit was a head cold, an ear infection, and a cough which may be due to a cold and may be due to asthma.  He's responded well to the inhalers and so far so good.

Since then his lungs are sounding better and his ear is clearing up, but he's developed a nasty diaper rash that won't go away, and he isn't sleeping the way he usually does.  All of it adds up to tired looking parents, but none of it is putting a dent in his good humour.

Owen's New Laugh

Owen has a new laugh.

He's always had the one laugh, spontaneous and wide-eyed and boisterous.  His new laugh appeared abruptly and it's quite different.  He wrinkles his nose and squints a bit, gives a wide grin, and makes a HEE HEE HEH kind of sound.  Most interestingly, this is quite clearly a deliberate laugh.  He does it in anticipation of things.  His original laugh is what you get when you surprise him; the new one is for times when he's in on the joke.

It's adorable.

Mobility Management

He'll be crawling soon.

Already he can get into a pushup position from his knees.  He's able to move himself around fairly well on his belly by pushing up with his arms and then rolling forward or flopping to the side.  He's working on getting his knees up but he hasn't yet quite figured out that he can get his knees under him when he's up on his arms.

I give it a matter of weeks until he's crawling at will, and not many weeks either.

As concerns walking, he is able to carry out the walking movements if you are holding his hands, and he can keep himself standing if he has a ledge to hold onto.

Water

He's getting a lot more out of bath-time these days.  He's figured out that splashing is fun.  When we first started bathing him we needed to give him a wet cloth over his chest to keep him warm, but he's dispensed with that now; he's quite content to just sit there and play.

There are plans afoot to get him into a pool.  This should not be entirely surprising to anyone who has met his mother.

Give Peas a Chance

We tried adding peas to his food repetoire, after oats and barley.  He eats them, but the looks he was giving when he first tried them were epic.  I got it all on video.  We are putting the peas on hold due to an unexplained rash, but neither of us really think the peas are causally responsible.

I don't think Owen necessarily minds a cessation in the peas offensive.

Other Stuff

I got my wisdom teeth out.  I was under for an hour and a half, sleepy and bleeding everywhere for a day (seriously, at one point it looked like someone had been knifed in our bathroom), and unable to eat solid food for a week and a half.  The swelling wasn't too bad and my lovely wife's amazing repetoire of outstanding soups kept me going, supplemented by the occasional DQ treat.  I'm now back to eating real food, waiting for the stitches to fall out, and getting used to the rearrangement in the landscape of my mouth.

Overall, it pretty much sucked and I can't say I recommend it.
