If you hadn't noticed, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, there was a recent flap in the Senate when a 21 year old page decided to stick it to the man.
On a purely tactical level, being a conservative at heart, I hope this is representative of what we can expect from the left in this country over the next few years. Presenting a shallow, self-important, and utterly inconsequential protest in the direct presence of a Conservative government making weighty and important decisions on the future of the country nicely frames how lost and weak the left is right now.
Otherwise serious left-wing political types are very excited about this emphasizing of their inconsequentiality. I can only assume that this position is a product of the same muddy thinking which has led them to their current position, and as such, I of course wish to encourage them.
The reaction on twitter was predictable; lots of people lauding this person as a hero. Apparently, sacrificing a menial job you were going to lose in three weeks in any event in exchange for zero chance of prosecution and a bevy of job offers from leftie think tanks and political organizations qualifies for the Hero moniker in Canada's left. That's sad, but not surprising.
What is surprising is how she was able to release a manifesto calling for, seriously, a "Canadian Spring", echoing the "Arab Spring" in which brutal totalitarian regimes have been overthrown in the middle east. This individual sees some parallel between Harper's Canada and the regimes in Egypt, Libya and elsewhere in the middle east. Any person of conscience must be deeply offended at this trivialization of the thousands of brutal, horrific rapes and murders committed by the government in those places for the express purpose of terrorizing their own people. I truly must wonder how many men, women and children must suffer and die before their pain can no longer be used as a political football by the left in this country.
The fact that this is accepted without comment by the left is just another sign of their shallow lack of moral perspective and intellectual cowardice. I keep telling myself not to be surprised at this, and yet, somehow, I still am.
In a few days this will sink beneath the radar, ultimately inconsequential, but I felt compelled to draw attention to the implications of the reaction it has inspired, or lack thereof.
